- please be seated. ladies and gentlemen, on behalf of the university and the college ofliberal arts and sciences, i welcome each of you. today is a very special dayfor all of our graduates and their proud families and friends. today's ceremony ispatterned after a ritual that has been repeated throughout

the long history of higher education, and is duplicated throughout the world wherever there areuniversities and colleges. the robes we wear are reminders of the medieval originsof today's universities, but the spirit of commencement is modern, always new, and alwaysfocused on the future. these commencement exercises recognize the efforts and achievementsof our graduating students.

i hope all of you, students, families, and friends, will enjoy this ceremony, which marks a very important day in the lives of the graduates. graduating from collegeis a momentous occasion. each of you has worked hard and persevered to reach this importantjuncture in your lives. many of you have worked to help support your expenses here at university.

others have spent time and energy outside the classroom as well, in student government, fine arts performance activities, research, intercollegiate athletics, university or community service, in addition to your studies. yet each of you has succeeded in achieving your common goal, a college education.

your studies haveprovided you a foundation for an exciting lifetimeof discovery and learning. we hope and trust that youwill use your education in ways to improve your life, and the lives of others in your families, communities, and around the world. to join me in honoringyou today is barry butler, executive vice president and provost. also present arerepresentatives of the faculty,

gabrielle bui. elle, as she wants to be called, is graduating today witha biochemistry major and has an economics minor. she is from iowa city, iowa. elle is a university ofiowa presidential scholar, william and effa mcmeans scholar, old gold scholar, national merit and provost scholar,

and an iowa scholars award recipient. she also has been an undergraduateresearch program fellow at sloan kettering in new york city. elle has conductedresearch in several labs in the carver college of medicine, where she will begin her studies as a medical student next fall. today, after only threeyears at university of iowa, she graduates from the collegeof liberal arts and sciences

with high distinction. elle? - thank you, dean djalali, for that introduction. first of all, i just want to say congratulations class of 2016. we've survived finals andour undergraduate chapter at the university of iowa is ending. before we set off into the real world, i'm supposed to give you words of wisdom.

so i thought i'd share what i learned from pursing my childhood dreams. i didn't always want to be a physician. up through my freshman year of high school i dreamed of being an actress and living in new york city. as you can imagine, myparents were thrilled. but in the end i got toexperience both of these dreams, just not at the same time.

my freshman year in high school i was cast as a principle actress in the feature film smitty. honestly, don't watch it. it's not a very good movie, and any positive comments on netflix were written by my family. but, it's true. at the time, though, itwas incredibly exciting.

i thought this was myinvitation to hollywood and the beginning of my career. my opinion changed, though, as i saw how ugly the seemingly beautiful industry could be. for a minor role, imissed weeks of school. my grades started to drop. film crew actually encouragedme to quit public school, and i missed my freshman homecoming dance. i realized this was not a career i wanted.

by the end of high school,i had discovered medicine, and i enrolled at the university of iowa as a premed biochemistry major. by participating in research, summer undergraduate programs, working in the hospital, and presenting at research festivals, i secured a summer researchinternship at sloane kettering, a prestigious cancercenter in new york city.

with $500 in my checking account, i left for 10 weeks to live in the city and work as a research slave. my friends thought i was nuts. when i wasn't at the lab bench, though, i soaked in as much ofthe city as i could. i had some incredible adventures, one of which includes me sitting in a downtown tattoo parlor

with my 80-year-old grandmother. that's definitely a storyfor a different speech. but as the summer progressed, the nonstop bustle andexpense of new york city really started to wear on me. i was surviving on peanutbutter and oatmeal, and i really, really missed costco. yeah, my med school interviewers thought that line was funny.

i'm convinced that's why they let me in. my dedication to the midwest and to iowa was represented a la costco. anyway, by the end ofthe summer i realized new york city is a placethat i will visit, not live. as it turns out, my childhood dreams aren't the dreams thati think about today. what did i learn from all this? be a little crazy, and goafter what you really want.

you might only get one shot, so give it your all and seewhat amazing things can happen when passion is fueled by hard work. even if, at the end, you learn this isn't the life you want, the journey will have been worth it. then you can go forward to become the person you were always supposed to be without doubts or regrets of what if.

my second piece of advice? you are your own brand, so be unapologetic for your quirks. no one wants just a title and a face. we want a human being with the expertise and enthusiasm to get the job done. so here are my words of wisdom. reach for the stars. work hard.

discover yourself, and in the process do amazing things. once again, congratulations class of 2016. i can't wait to see howwe'll change the world. - thank you very much, elle. we come now to the conferring of degrees. i invite executive vicepresident and provost barry butler to come forward. i ask the graduating liberalarts and science students

to rise when i name the particular degree you are about to receive, and to please remain standing until degrees are recognized. will the candidates for the bachelor of fine arts please rise? will the candidates for thebachelor of science please rise? finally, will the candidates for the bachelor of arts please rise?

provost butler, these worthyand approved candidates, having completed all of therequirements for the degrees as listed in the commencement program, are recommended to you for theconferring of those degrees by the faculty of the collegeof liberal arts and sciences. - on the recommendation of the faculty of the college ofliberal arts and sciences and university college, and by the authority vested in me

by the board of regents, state of iowa, i confer on each of you the degree, bachelor of applied studies, bachelor of liberal studies, bachelor of music, bachelor of fine arts, bachelor of science, and bachelor of arts, as qualified and designated.

congratulations. - please remain standing forthe tassel turning ceremony. the turning of the tasselis a traditional gesture by which each student signifies passage from degree candidate to graduate. now, before we recognizeeach of you individually, i ask all of you to mark your new status as graduates of the university of iowa college of liberal arts and sciences

by moving the tassel of your cap from the right side to the left. what a wonderful moment, and congratulations to all of you. we come now to the part of the program where we individuallyrecognize each graduate. we are proud of every student who has met the demandingrequirements that we set for the attainment of degrees.

we note with specialsatisfaction those students who have earned thehigh grade point average that qualifies them for graduation with one of three levels of distinction. this afternoon they wear their distinction literally on their sleeves. three stars signify highest distinction, two stars, high distinction, and one star, distinction.

students graduatingwith honors in the major wear a white cordon. students graduating with university honors are recognized by the medal worn on a black and gold lanyard. phi beta kappa is theoldest and most prestigious honor society for students inthe liberal arts and sciences. to be elected to the society, students must meetmembership stipulations,

including an academic ranking in the upper 10% of the senior class, based on grade point average. will members who haveaccepted their election to phi beta kappa pleaserise, or wave your hand, because everybody is already-- please be seated. we are proud to have somany graduates here today, and we think every single one of them

deserves his or her moment of recognition. on behalf of the provost, the faculty, and all the otherfamilies in the audience, i ask you to hold yourapplause and celebration until the last name has been read. the graduates will be presented by matthew gilchrist and clint huntrods. - [voiceover] amie huber. - hallie von bank.
