hi welcome to talking tech the technology show for you the non tech person also known as someone with a life stick around today and we are going to talk about some interesting tech news including something about pokã©mon go and gadget gifts to give to somebody or even better to get from somebody we have listener q&a
and also our app pick of the week hi, this is vikram mohan and you are listening to talking tech episode 02 and i'am joined by my co-host vinayak hi, hi everyone so without further ado let’s move onto news where have promised our viewers and listeners something about pokã©mon go i believe you have some bad and some good news vinayak yeah, the news on pokã©mon go is that it’s just released in japan
so that is good for them but the problem with that is it suddenly stopped working in india maybe mumbai and delhi still they can play on it but hyderabad just doesn't have anything on the app anymore you can login and still have your pokã©mon that you have caught but nothing else works we're not sure if niantic is the reason that this outage is there in hyderabad it just looks like the data has been wiped off the servers
for hyderabad so the game whenever it is taken down or the data is missing generally the game is going to be released in that area so the asia release with japan starting out it might be coming out soon in india in the next section we have gorilla glass five i think most of us when we drop our phones it gives us a heart attack like ok, hopefully the screen is not damaged how many time have you dropped your phone vikram?
more times than i would care to admit i have very clumsy fingers so i don’t want to even revisit those bad memories so gorilla glass is supposed to be much stronger than earlier and a fall from 1.6 meters onto rough hard ground still doesn’t break the screen is what they say so it has to be still used in modern new phones as it has not come out 100% as yet lets hope it helps make the phone screens much stronger and for our third story bit of a bad news for
the worlds largest technology company iphone has for long been the highest selling phone at least for the last few years though in terms of market share android far outpaces ios, i think android has about 80% or something but, in terms of a single phone which is the largest seller its been iphone by far with the nearest rival being of course the samsung galaxy s for that particular year. now, one of the reasons why android has never managed to outpace iphone in terms of pure sales
is because there's no one single model of an android phone. you've got you've got loads of models like your galaxy s's from samsung, galaxy note's. you've got lg and we've got tons of other even local manufacturers like micromax last quarter apple actually announced that for the first time there was a decline in iphone sales and including a decline in china too which was their largest growth market. so there's this analysis firm called kantar which releases sales figures , so they've said that even this quarter
there's been a steady decline in sales for iphones typically we tend to see a decline in the quarter just before a new iphone is launched i believe, vinayak , last week you were telling us some juicy rumors on what we can expect for iphone 7 even i'am sure a couple of our listeners who might have been thinking to go out and buy an iphone might have just thought, ok, you know, let me wait and see what comes out in a couple of months this does tend to happen but, the interesting part is for the first time ever the galaxy s7 or the galaxy s for that particular year has become the highest seller replacing iphone
this is of course only in the us market but still a big change in the phone market so we'll see how that goes. and of-course vinayak i think you have a galaxy s6 right, what's your daily phone? yeah, i have a galaxy s6 edge plus so you're on the winning side right now. the final news is something which, honestly, it struck me as a little bizarre news so basically the company which was, the last company making vcr's yes, the old video casette recorders, those tapes
the vcr's are going to be stopped they are not going to make them any longer i know exactly what you are thinking "they were making them?" apparently, they were and vinayak the surprising thing is you know what, i went to amazon, i just thought ok lets see if actually somebody sells it. i couldn't find one on amazon or flipkart or any of those online retailers. not even on ebay
and i saw the sales figures for last year it was 750,000 units i mean of course, it's no iphone or no playstation but that's a respectable number. 750,000 people have bought vcr's just in the last year alone where were they being sold more, in japan or primarily in japan so they still use vcr's like video tapes over there that means
you got me , i mean, i would think somebody's holding on to their old memories in terms of maybe their wedding videos, or something for whatever reasons they have not managed to convert it into, they have not gone to one of these shady shops which offer to convert your video cassettes into digital media. so they're probably buying this the company which apparently still makes vcr's, one who are shutting down are called funai electric and it just struck a bell the last vcr, i think it was a vcp without a recording feature so our last vcp, when i was back in school.
was actually a funai vcp with a feather touch it had a feather logo and all that, so we had a funai vcp so they are the last manufacturers of vcp's and they are stopping my personal opinion, if any of you know anyone who has bought a vcr in the last even five years please, i want to talk to them. i want to find out, what was the reason, what is the driving force, is it just to uphold tradition?
we would want to talk to somebody like that thats news for this week vinayak so today's feature segment we have gadget gifts for techies like us so these are options that you can get us or someone who you know, who is a techie. so the first one we are going to talk about is smartwatches smartwatches are becoming more common-place and there's a plethora of options available brands like samsung, apple are in the limelight
newcomers like fossil and casio are also coming in. actual watchmakers are starting to make smartwatches now. apple watch 2 is supposed to be landing sometime soon these are some of our smartwatch picks we have right now there's the samsung gear s2 which is supposed to be the best at the moment and is currently available and the rotating bezel is slick and it has a great battery life as compared to most of it's rivals but it's got a hefty price tag of rs 22-23,000 then we have the apple watch which only works with iphones and is priced at around rs 30,000
its an expensive gift, but it will provide the best experience for iphone users. then on a budget you have the sony smartwatch 3, that's around rs 12,000 and then the asus zen watch 2 at rs 10,000 which are also great choices and if money is no object you can go for the tag heuer connected which is at $1500. so you wont recommend my old gwatch, the original android wear one. gwatch it prefers to be called the gwatch i got the gwatch , it was on sale so i think i picked it up for about $99 and i also got $50 of play store credit so
watch out if you don't mind a very clunky this is how thick it is, it doesn't do much, there is no dials, and it's not round mainly sometimes you can pick these things up for a bargain i have this for a couple of years now i guess, this is a little different from your standard tech pick for a geek maybe a bluetooth toothbrush so you must be thinking, ok, whats a bluetooth enabled toothbrush and why do i need one basically a bluetooth toothbrush, is an electric toothbrush that would connect to your phone
and using the free app provided it would monitor how you are brushing and how often you are brushing and if you are doing it right basically the simplest explanation is, it would count to 120 seconds for you it generally divides your teeth into four quadrants each quadrant would be given around 30 seconds so you have to make sure you brush each quadrant for 30 seconds with a name like bluetooth, i'am sure it was just a matter of time till somebody came out with a toothbrush, wasn't it. and the app also keeps showing you news items, photographs and all that. so it just keeps you distracted, so that you just keep brushing.
that's how they expect to distract you, to make sure you complete your brushing. after brushing an emoticon pops up and shows you've completed. that's when you can stop but if you still want to read the news you can continue on that app. the million dollar question when was the last time you went to a dentist and do you have good teeth. my teeth are in good condition, because i do use one of those brushes. it comes with a neat wireless charging stand, and two other (model) brushes. as if you don't spend enough time in the bathroom before, now you have your official excuse to carry your phone in to look at while brushing
my pick, you know what, after seeing this, mine's not exotic. i wish i had picked something cooler, but this is cool. what i have here is this is called google cardboard a couple of years ago, in fact now we are talking about virtual reality a lot so this was google's answer to the first answer to virtual reality they came out with this really simple solution for virtual reality. and it's just like the name implies, its made of cardboard as you can see.
it's just cardboard with a couple of lenses so you get these cardboard viewers, this is called a viewer so you buy one of these viewers, and you just plop in your phone most android phones work, and i believe they also have an iphone app you download an app called google cardboard you plop this in, close this and watch it like a binocular or like a view master now, i have to say, i mean, i have gifted i think three or four of this among my friends i have gifted three or four of these to my friends and i have always
everyone have been amazed with it especially on the first time they try it out they are blown away by virtual reality, because you know it is something which is which most of us have never experienced especially i think its a really good buy for kids because here are a ton of educational videos videos where there are teachers who take them out on field trips, lets say to the zoo, explain to them on each animal keep in mind that you are not just watching this video of a gorilla so you have the gorilla right in front of you, you can look around, look up, down you can look all around, its ike i said as the name implies
it's virtual reality you have lots of videos, you have as expected there are some horror games to really scare the crap out of you and of course we have virtual roller coaster simulations so google cardboard would be my first pick for a gift, especially if you are on a tight budget because these cardboard viewers, they retail anywhere between rs 300-500,600 we will have a link to a few of them on the show notes depending on the phone size, you can choose to pick one i would personally say, go for something with a head strap in the back
so that you don't have to hold them continuously because you know, your arms are going to pain. so we'll have a couple of options yeah, so this , what i have with me is samsung's version of google cardboard this is called the gear vr which is more plastic but you can only use these with samsung phones and that too the newer ones, so you would generally open this up like this and then you would actually dock your phone in there and as soon as you dock it in there, it opens up the gear vr app.
the apps on the gear vr are completely different as compared to the actual google cardboard application. it's more plastic, it's more rigid it is more expensive automatically, it retails around rs 7,500 right now but you have the physical controls here yeah, that's certainly a good option, especially if you are buying a new galaxy s7 or something i believe they have a combo offer with one of these gear vr's so if you are buying one of those, i would strongly suggest going for the gear vr. i have tried it out and it certainly is way better than what we have in the cardboard and of course you know, it's clearly only the question of the budget.
this is like rs 500 and that's rs 6000 my next pick is something which i just cant recommend highly enough , its one of the best gadgets which came out in the last few years. this is the chromecast this is infact, what i hold in my hand the first generation chromecast. we have the new version, which is available now. so chromecast is a very simple device, this is all there is to it, apart from a small usb cable so what you need to do is, just plug this into your tv and there's a tiny usb port, so you just take one of the micro usb cable, it ships with a cable
so connect to the usb and forget about it once you have set this up, you also need to do a tiny setup, either on your phone or on your laptop and once you're set you'll be able to cast or broadcast anything from your phone or laptop onto your tv so all those dinky little youtube videos you were used to watching on your phone you will see a small cast icon, you click that and it will show you the name of your chromcast i have a couple of chromecast's for each one of the tv's and the moment i say cast it shows me bedroom tv and the hall tv and i can select whichever one and it casts immediately over there and i think there is something that the people can either love or hate it doesn't ship with a remote
on the plus side you know, you don't have another remote which you can lose i already have six remotes in the hall for all the various gadgets this , your phone becomes your remote. you fast forward and rewind using your phone. you control the volume using your phone its great to listen to music and watch music videos on youtube, on your tv and to watch movie trailers, and increasingly we have more apps which support chromecast but leaving alone the mobile aside, if you have a laptop with chrome running on it you can cast any tab so what was really useful in the past couple of months we are big game of thrones fans
who isn't and we were watching it on hotstar and hotstar unfortunatly the app doesn't support chromecasting so instead what we did is we logged into hotstar from the browser and i cast my browser onto the tv and you know, we could watch hotstar on the big tv instead of having to watch it on our laptop before i just drone on and on its great for watching your photos, so you go out to the zoo or for a trip
you come back home, all your photos are on your phone you have two or three different phones each of you can just directly show your photos on the tv show your videos on tv and have a more , the experience is way better than just having to pass around the phone to people so i think in india i think it costs rs 3500 we'll have a link to it on the show notes too this is one of the gifts where you give it someone, give it to your family member and even you end up enjoying i would certainly recommend chromecast
those are my picks vinayak this time for the app selection, we have two apps i have chosen pushbullet so what is pushbullet, you must be thinking pushbullet is an app on your phone which is the fastest and easiest way to gets links, notes and files onto your desktop computer or vice-versa so suppose you want to send something off the desktop to the phone or from the phone to the desktop is pretty easy using pushbullet
android n has its own , what do you say, i guess, implementation of the same but this is for people who don't have android n and you get the same functionality on your phone right now all you have to do is install the app on your phone and on your browser, on the computer you're supposed to install an extension on chrome or you can go to the site pushbullet site
this allows communication to happen between the phone and the pushbullet site using your google account whenever you put a link or something into pushbullet on your phone it can go to your browser and if you wanted to send a file across to your phone using pushbullet all you have to do is on the desktop when you open up the app, dump a file into it and it comes onto your phone the advantage is, wherever you are you can send files to yourself
so you can continue you browsing whenever you go away from you home you just dump all the links onto pushbullet and you have everything in your hand on your phone another thing pushbullet allows is to see the phone notifications on the system so this could be sms notifications, whatsapp notifications, or incoming calls so in case you had you phone charging somewhere else it would still popup on your laptop showing that so and so is calling you or so and so sms message is recieved pushbullet has now become a paid application but there are quite a few free
features that are still available so , sms you can reply directly off the computer and you can send files upto a size of 25 mb across the applications and you can also mirror your notifications still in the free app but if you want whatsapp, if you want to reply on whatsapp i think you have to pay atleast $3.33 which is billed monthly if you are taking an annual plan if you are not taking an annual plan it's around $4.99 a month so that is my selection for today
pushbullet is one of those apps which once you use it for a month or so you'll wonder how you ever managed without it one of the interesting features, if you pay for it i stopped using it , like i said, becasue most of the features are now replicated on the latest version of android but it also allows universal copy paste so if i want i can copy something on my browser in my laptop, so i do a ctrl-c here and i can paste it over there (on the phone) similarly i can copy somebody's phone number in my phone and i can paste it into a word document here (on the pc)
pushbullet, we will have a link to it of course on the show notes my pick for this week is a website, a webservice called zamzar i'am sure at some point or other all of us have had this problem where we wanted to convert a file from one format to another so you might have had a pdf which you want to convert to word or excel which you want to convert to a pdf or it could be an image from jpeg to something else
could be a video which you want to convert it could also be a an audio so zamzar is an online site which takes care of this so you don't have to download, or you don't have to google for the which software does this kind of conversion download it, install it who knows what kind of
crapware that it brings with it so zamzar is an online site you can logon to it select upload your file and then it selects the you select your target format and it does it. my dad is, again surprisingly found a lot of use for zamzar becasue it converts pdf's into
kindle format so he uses that to convert lot of he does a lot of reading, so he uses that i would say just check it out, it has loads of options for it supports pretty much every file format on earth so thats zamzar.com zamzar i think that's it for my pick i think that's our show for today.
